How to Organize and Store Holiday Decorations in the Office
Written by Luis Toledo on . Posted in Corporate Relocation, Moving Tips, Office Moving
The festive season is just around the corner. The home or office needs to be prepped with majestic wreaths, strings of dazzling holiday lights, scary signs, and eye-catching ornaments. It is important to keep the décor in pristine condition when the holiday season is not in full swing. A few tips make organizing sentimental holiday décor as easy as pie.
1. Wreaths
Gorgeous fall and winter wreaths can be kept intact for each upcoming year. Sturdy hat boxes are ideal for storing fragile wreaths. A large hat box can snugly fit multiple wreaths. Or, attach wreaths to hangers using twist ties. Protect the wreaths from dust and cobwebs with dry cleaning or garment bags.
A wardrobe organizer is an ideal storage solution for delicate wreaths. Slide each wreath onto the rod for safe, long-term storage. A second option is to purchase a clothing rack, which can be housed in the basement or storage room. Both methods preserve the wreaths for seasons to come.
2. Lights
Holiday lighting is a spectacular show but can be a hassle to organize. Take safety precautions before storing the lights. Each light strand should be examined for flaws prior to putting them away. Discard frayed or damaged wires and burnt-out bulbs. Holiday fires are on no one’s wish list.
Roll the lights around an inexpensive cord reel, like those used with extension cords. Or, use a clothes hanger to vertically wrap the string of lights around it; conveniently hang the hanger in storage. Alternately, cut a slit in a cardboard piece and wrap the lights around it.
A perfect spool, PVC pipes make it easy to wind lights after the holiday season and unwind them before the new one. Run the male end through the PVC pipe. Wrap the entire length of the lights around the pipe. For neat and tidy storage, plug the ends together.
3. Ornaments
Families keep ornaments for generations, passing them down to children and grandchildren. Offices may have traditions, too. Delicate ornaments and other decorations can be easily crushed if haphazardly tossed into a bin piled up with various décor. Preserve precious ornaments via any of multiple methods:
Keep ornaments intact by placing them in snug, individual compartments. Egg cartons and apple containers are inexpensive, sturdy and securely hold ornaments. Alternately, sort ornaments by color and seal them in clear, plastic gallon bags; place the filled bags in a plastic bin.
Plastic drinking cups are plentiful and effectively safeguard fragile ornaments while in storage. Glue the bottoms of several plastic cups to large, flat pieces of cardboard. Place an ornament inside each cup. Layer the cups and cardboard inside plastic bins. Each bin holds several layers of ornaments.
Label plastic storage bins. If using a storage app, like Sortly, photograph the ornaments. The photos in the Sortly app offer instant visual details about what ornaments are inside each bin. When the next holiday season rolls around, the ornaments will be sorted, labeled, photographed and ready for the tree.
4. Garlands
Shimmery and plentiful, garlands add a festive touch to the holiday atmosphere. Utilizing ordinary water bottles, the long strings of beads can be stored separately to keep from causing a tangled mess amidst the décor. Drop each garland inside the plastic water bottles for simple storage.
5. Gift Wrap
Despite the loads of wrapped gifts presented and accepted each holiday season, plenty of gift wrap tubes manage to lay around. Use the leftover gift wrap for upcoming seasons. For use in the next year, the dazzling paper must be stored in a dry, protective space.
Cardboard tubes, such as those found in the middle of paper towels, keep gift wrap crinkle-free. Make a single cut straight through the tube, which allows the circular cardboard to loosely wrap around the gift wrap and keep the paper from unwinding during the year.
The long, rectangular length of laundry hampers (or recycling bins in offices) are the perfect spot to toss in any unused rolls of gift wrap. The laundry hampers and bins keep the gift wrap secure, dry and in pristine condition. Shoe organizers accomplish the same, organized result.
6. Mantel Displays
The fireplace is embellished each holiday season with cheery mantel displays. Mantel decorations, like those that spell J-O-Y and Halloween, come in multiple, separate parts and must be assembled. Make next year’s reassembly quick by storing the mantel décor parts together in the same storage bin.
The key to preserving the life of holiday decorations is to keep them in a cool, dry place. Décor that features wood should ideally be housed anywhere other than a moisture-logged basement. Plastic containers with tight lids help prevent condensation from seeping into the compartment.
While labeling bins is helpful, consider using apps to keep track of the assortment of decorations that are stored in each bin. The visual inventory makes unpacking for next year’s holiday season seamless and a lot less frustrating—just as the holidays should be.
